The Mathematician’s Guide to Irrationality

What is the reason for the soul to atrophy? When is the point that when the only thing you ever loved doing becomes routine and mundane? When art becomes business, then business ceases to be an art. When the only excitement that comes and tingles the soul are numbers. When business drives you, is there a role reversal between the vehicle and the driver?

The by-product of feeling i.e. numbers become the only source of feeling left. Is it that getting lost is an option one must be willing to exercise all the time? Can creativity be measured in terms of output? Is there a value to sell the soul for a life of luxurious slavery? Is feeding the family a good enough excuse to die before ones breath runs out?

The Soul of a Mathematician

I wake up in the morning. My mouth is raw from the previous night’s cigarettes and betel nuts. The groggy sensation, after effects of a mini overdose of sleeping pills is still present. I cough up some mucus and ponder at what I have become. Yet the strength to ponder disappears and I disappear into the grey undefined areas of my life once again.
I am awakened by the sudden power failure, I can feel beads of sweat dripping down my neck following the curvature of my spine. The now stagnant fan on the roof reminds me of myself and how brilliance can be a man’s downfall. It is then that the decision to eliminate the grey areas and make things into perfect monochrome is made.
Perfect blacks, perfect white upon the canvas of life only appease the eye for a limited period of time. Then suddenly the color palette bounces vividly in front of the third eye of consciousness and drags me into a now deeper, yet completely different and beautiful void, the void of consciousness...

Managing people in work teams effectively

Hello everyone! Our current post is a bit different from the traditional photography related posts we usually post on this blog. Today, we will discuss about the most important element of any business (for e.g. a services business like photography) i.e. People and teamwork!
Yes my friends, whether it be a services business like photography or a manufacturing business, whether you are an employee or a self-employed entrepreneur, there is always one constant issue that we continually face, which is to manage our workforce effectively.
The following is a list of basic pointers to keep in mind to address the complex area of people management:

a)        Knowing your team's knowledge base and key competency areas:

Make sure you are familiar with the key knowledge areas of your team and ensure your team has a right mix of members having different and complementing skill sets necessary to complete the assigned tasks. This helps ensure that the overall knowledge base of the team is optimum for the task execution and ultimately towards achievement of business goals / objectives.

b)        Assigning defined tasks within defined timelines:

It is very important to assign clear tasks along with a reasonable timeframe for completion. The clearer the task is defined the easier will it be for the team members to carry them out.

c)        Being approachable and monitoring the team's performance regularly:

It is very important that the team leader is approachable and gives off a "positive air" so that any difficulties in performing the tasks are resolved on a timely basis. Moreover, the team's assigned tasks should be monitored on a regular basis so that they can be completed within the stated timeframe.
The delicate balance between too much micro management and trusting the team members for the assigned tasks must be achieved and carefully handled to ensure that there is no demotivation in the team. If your organization is small and there is only a single team then the performance appraisals can be done easily, but if your organization is multi layered and has multiple businesses then a proper performance appraisal system is a must.

d)        Communication of business needs' linkage with the task:

It is very important that the business needs of the organization which led to need of assigned task to be performed are communicated and understood by the team members. There may be times when such information may be required to be kept confidential, but where confidentiality is not an issue, such clear communication will motivate the team as it links their task to the "bigger picture of the organization". Thus, for e.g. explaining the importance of an editing requirement for a client will help ensure that the editor understands that exactly what and how his / her assigned task will contribute to the organization as a whole.

e)        Rewards / promotions, counseling and letting go:

Once the assigned tasks have completed conduct a performance review of the team members. For those who did exceptionally well, praise them well but mere lip service is not enough. Ensure that you have made arrangements to adequately reward their extra efforts by promotions or performance bonuses.
As for those members whose performance was not up to the mark, conduct a counseling session with them highlighting their weaknesses and how they can improve upon those areas. In the next tasks, monitor their performance for close compliance and see how whether the weaknesses are being resolved or not.
If not, conduct more sessions and if the team member still doesn’t perform then one must question if the non-performance is due to any valid personal reasons (for e.g. sickness in family) or that the team member is deliberately avoiding work. If the latter is the case and it is established that the lack of performance is deliberate then the difficult task of letting him / her go must be done to ensure that the team performance is not affected.

These were some key pointers to ensure that the projects and the businesses do not go off track via improper people management. We at Pi Studio hope all of you succeed in delivering quality results to your clients every time!

Shoot for Dekho Japan Festival based on "47 Ronin"

Pi Studio recently collaborated with Mannaal e Fizza to shoot a cross cultural friendship shoot between Pakistan and Japan organized by Metal Seinen. The shoot was for the event titled "Dekho Japan" being held at Peral Continental Hotel in Khi on Saturday October 26 2013 and Sunday October 27 2013.
The shoot was based on the famous japanese event of the "Revenge of the 47 Ronin". The following are the details:
"The revenge of the Forty-seven Ronin (四十七士 Shi-jū-shichi-shi) took place in Japan at the start of the 18th century. One noted Japanese scholar described the tale, the most famous example of the samurai code of honor, bushidō, as the country's "national legend."
The story tells of a group of samurai who were left leaderless (becoming ronin) after their daimyo (feudal lord) Asano Naganori was compelled to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka, whose title was Kōzuke no suke. The ronin avenged their master's honor by killing Kira, after waiting and planning for almost two years. In turn, the ronin were themselves obliged to commit seppuku for committing the crime of murder."

Thus, Pi Studio juxtaposed this concept with the Pakistani importance to the number 47 (it was Pakistan's year of independence). Moreover, Ronin means becoming leaderless and that is precisely the scenario we have in Pakistan since its independence and our nation has felt this leadership vacuum at many critical times in our history. We used the following japanese painting as our inspiration which portrayed the Seppuku (ritual Suicide) by wife of Onodera Junai, who was one of the 47 Ronin.  In the painting it is worht noting that the legs are tied together, which is a female feature of seppuku (ritual suicide) to ensure a "decent" posture in death (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forty-seven_Ronin).

The technical details of the shoot were pretty simple. The image was shot in RAW format on the Nikon D300 with the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM lens. For studio lighting we used our trusty Simpex 600D Strobes with softbox on one light and bounce umbrella on the other as our modifiers. The shoot was done on a white seamless paper backdrop. The final post processed shot turned out to be like this:

This image is displayed at the Dekho Japan event mentioned earlier along with another shot for the write-up and our travel shots of Pakistan.

Happy 2nd Birthday to us and the paradox of disconnect!

Hello everyone! Sorry for being away again for a while. We were again tied up in bringing you great work which you will see soon! Recently I was pondering over the concept of disconnect.
Hmm... well err what does that mean? I mean that as an artist one feels disconnected at times and it is at these times that creativity is in full force.
The disconnect can be with the soul or with the material world which is unsustainable for a long period of time. For when this disconnect ends in us acheiving perfect harmony for a short span of time we find equilibrium and peace till the next time we again tilt our equilibrium. This ongoing process is the way to achieve the necessary "digging" in one's soul.
This is the disconnect which led me and Hussain to start Pi Studio and it is this disconnect which urges us to wake up everyday and think of something new and explore our passion of photography. Thus I would like to say this:

HAPPY SECOND BIRTHDAY TO PI STUDIO!

Pi is now 2 years old and ironically my late mother's birthday is also on this same date of 26th October. Oh how beautiful and ugly a day can be at the same time!
